What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable materials used to add or restore volume beneath the skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are among the most commonly used in Canada. HA is a substance naturally found in the body that helps bind water, although the gel in an injectable filler is a manufactured medical product.
Depending on the product and treatment area, fillers may soften certain folds, improve facial balance or add fullness to areas such as the cheeks or lips. They cannot stop ageing, erase every wrinkle or replace a surgical lift. A consultation helps determine whether filler is a sensible choice—or whether no injection is needed.
What can filler help with?

They are different treatments, even though people often mention them together.
Dermal fillers
Fillers place material beneath the skin to add volume or support certain facial contours. They are often considered for fullness and lines related to volume loss.

Botulinum toxin (Botox)
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces activity in selected facial muscles. It is often used for expression-related lines, such as frown lines, rather than to add facial volume.

- Suitability and treatment location require assessment.
Neither treatment is automatically better. They have different uses and risks, and combining them is not necessary for everyone.
What to expect from consultation to follow-up
Before an elective injectable treatment, you should feel comfortable asking questions and understand exactly what is being proposed.
Discuss your goals and history
Talk through your concerns, previous fillers or cosmetic procedures, allergies, medications, active skin problems and relevant medical history. The clinician assesses your facial anatomy and whether filler is appropriate.
Review the plan and product
Ask about the product name, where it is licensed for use, the proposed treatment area, alternatives, expected results, costs, common side effects and how serious complications would be handled.
Treatment and aftercare
If you choose to proceed, the clinician may use a needle or cannula depending on the plan. Mild tenderness, swelling or bruising can follow. You should receive individual aftercare advice and instructions for any concerning symptoms.
A consultation does not obligate you to go ahead with injections. You can always take time to decide.
Side effects and risks worth knowing
Swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising are relatively common after filler injections and often settle. Less common problems include infection, lumps, persistent swelling, allergic reactions or an unwanted cosmetic result.
A rare but serious complication is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can interrupt blood flow and damage tissue. Depending on the location, this may cause skin injury, vision loss or stroke. This is one reason filler should be administered by an appropriately qualified medical professional who is prepared to respond to complications.
Tell your clinician about any previous filler treatments, even if they were years ago.
Discuss active infection, inflamed skin, cold sores, major allergies or prior reactions.
Share your medications, bleeding risks and any medical conditions that affect treatment.
Mention pregnancy or breastfeeding; safety information for elective fillers is limited.
Ask about the exact filler product, Health Canada licensing and the emergency response plan.
Unusual pain or skin colour change after filler needs immediate attention.
Seek emergency medical care immediately for sudden vision changes, severe or increasing unusual pain, white/grey/blue skin near the injection site, or stroke-like symptoms. Contact the treating clinician urgently as well, but do not delay emergency care.
Give the results time to settle
HA fillers often add volume straight away, but that first look may include swelling. Your final appearance can change as the area settles. Some people return to their usual routine soon after treatment; others prefer to allow time for bruising or swelling.
How long results last varies with the product, area, amount injected and individual factors. Rather than relying on a fixed number of months, ask what is realistic for the filler recommended to you.
Some HA fillers can be dissolved using hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate. This is not a universal or risk-free reversal option, and other filler materials may be difficult or impossible to remove.
Follow your own aftercare plan
Your clinician may recommend temporarily avoiding strenuous exercise, heat or pressure on the treated area.
Let swelling settle
Do not judge the outcome entirely from photographs taken immediately after injection.
Do not massage unless advised
Instructions vary by filler. Avoid pressing or manipulating the area unless the treating clinician tells you to.
Know when to call
Contact the clinic about persistent, worsening or unexpected symptoms. For red-flag signs, seek emergency care immediately.
Questions about dermal fillers
How long does hyaluronic acid filler last?
Results are temporary, but there is no single duration that fits everyone. The product, treatment location and individual factors affect how long the visible result lasts. Your clinician can provide an estimate for the specific filler being considered.
Will my face look overfilled or unnatural?
A conservative approach can help maintain your natural proportions, but no aesthetic outcome can be guaranteed. Talk openly about how subtle you want the change to be and ask whether filler is appropriate for your features.
Is filler painful?
You may feel pinching, pressure or stinging during an injection. Some products contain lidocaine and other numbing methods may be used when suitable. Discomfort varies by area and person.
What is the difference between fillers and Botox?
Fillers add volume and can soften certain folds or enhance contours. Botox relaxes selected muscles to reduce expression-related lines. The best option depends on what is causing your concern.
Can hyaluronic acid filler be dissolved?
In some circumstances, HA filler can be broken down with hyaluronidase. It requires medical assessment and carries its own considerations. Not every filler is made of HA, and some fillers cannot be easily removed.
